Oscar reparations:Colorful Jewelry Captivates PublicIt’s no good having a style consultant to pick out all the best dresses and T-shirts if you haven’t got some amazing jewelry to complement them.
One place that is bound to dazzle us when it comes to jewels is the Oscars red carpet and by the sounds of things, it’s going to be a riot of color this year.
Forget plain gold necklaces and simple silver charms, as Lindsay Meyer from Building Communications told 3 News that bright, pretty hues are going to be making a real impact at the event.
“Color really makes a piece pop. It can really add to any outfit,” she said, noting that the likes of Diane Kruger, who wore Harry Winston to the Screen Actors Guild Awards recently, are already sporting the trend.
Ms Meyer predicted that blues and greens will be especially popular, so get hunting for some special sapphire jewels!
The 82nd Annual Academy Awards will take place on March 7th 2010.

Paris Mourns McQueen As Fashion Week Opens

Paris Mourns McQueen As Fashion Week OpensOne of the usual Paris highlights, Alexander McQueen’s show, has been taken from the official catwalk schedule and transformed into a subdued presentation following the designer’s death, but there will be plenty of other flamboyant events happening at and around Paris fashion week. While brands such as Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Hermès will be giving attendees an update on what’s new in French luxury, international designers including the Dutch Dries van Noten or Viktor & Rolf, British Gareth Pugh or Japanese label Comme des Garçons will present more forward-thinking fashion avantgarde. Designers to watch are the French capital’s rising star Damir Doma as well as former Dior Homme designer Nicolas Andreas Taralis, who now shows under his own name. Sonia Rykiel will have to prove that she didn’t forget how to do high fashion after her successful ranges for H&M, but while no one would seriously doubt that, Ungaro’s resurrection after last season’s Lindsay Lohan disaster is far more uncertain. It will also be interesting to see whether labels such as Balmain stick to their highly popular rock’n’roll chic instead of risking a new look, and if the ‘curvier model’ trend as seen in Italy (Prada) and London (Mark Fast) and an increased booking of Victoria’s Secret girls or high fashion colleagues like Lara Stone persist. Trade fair Première Classe will run concurrently to the fashion week, as will the edgier Tranoi, which for the first time features Tokyoeye, an initiative to promote Japanese brands in Paris. As for gossip, it has emerged on deadline.com that Zoolander writer Justin Theroux will be on site to “immerse himself on what is current in fashion” for the long-awaited sequel of the fashion parody. Also, French Vogue and luxe palace, Hôtel Crillon are collaborating for a meeting hub with low-calorie meals and a make-up pit stop, while party mogul Jean Roch is planning the launch of his VIP Room Theater – an expansion of his legendary nightclub, featuring an Italian trattoria, a café and a concept store – for March 5.

Edinburgh Charity Fashion Show 2010

Edinburgh Charity Fashion Show 2010Hailed as one of the biggest events in the society calendar, March signals the return of the Edinburgh Charity Fashion Show. Organised by Edinburgh University students, the show is now in its 7th year, having raised a staggering quarter of a million pounds for charity to date. Last year alone over £60,000 was raised for charities such as Maggie’s Cancer Care Centre.

The charities being supported this year include Marie Curie, The Scottish Association for Mental Health and Poppyscotland. Tickets for the shows, held at the Corn Exchange, are available for both nights: Friday 19 March is the student night, with a VIP night being held on the 20th. Afterparties for both nights will be held at the Opal Lounge nightclub, with specially made cocktails on the menu. The VIP night will also see the return of the infamous auction (past items have included Sting’s guitar). Each year, the shows are organised around a central theme, which this year is a surrealist spectacle of magical reality. The models, who are all students, have showcased some of the finest fashions by designers such as Luella and Vivienne Westwood in previous events. Martha Braddle, one of this year’s models, says that the surreal theme has been a fun concept to incorporate into both the models’ clothing and the choreography of the catwalk. In addition to the big names, promising students at the Edinburgh College of Art are being given a chance to showcase their talent, meaning this year’s show is a must-see event.

Fashion Week Woes Put Spotlight On Milan’s Influence

March 2, 2010 by saima naveed

Fashion Week Woes Put Spotlight On Milan's InfluenceMilan has long claimed its place among the top fashion capitals of the world but calendar woes have fashionistas asking whether it is losing influence.

While top names like Giorgio Armani, Gucci and Versace gave their all at the autumn/winter 2010-2011 catwalk shows and won wide praise for their lines, the talk of fashion week has centered on the intensive schedule of its cramped calendar.

Organizers were left scrambling to fit the major names into four days out of the Feb. 24 – March 1 run after powerful fashion editor, Vogue’s Anna Wintour, reportedly said she planned to shorten her attendance to go to Paris fashion week and then to the Oscars in Los Angeles.

Both local and international press have written about the “Wintour effect” on the northern Italian city and how designers were bowing to the demands of the international press.

Mario Boselli, the chairman of Italy’s National Chamber of Fashion — who organizes Milan fashion week — said Italian designers often showed they were not conscious of their power “and instead give in to the pressure of the foreign press.”

“I think the big masons should speak up. We are smaller but we had to schedule our show accordingly with the calendar,” Maurizio Modica, one of the designers at Frankie Morello, told. “The influence of Anna Wintour? It’s a reality.”

Milan has long relied on its status of the same big name brands that have been around for decades and whose creations are lapped up around the world. But main rival fashion capitals New York and Paris have longer schedules for this season. Industry observers also noted that there have been few internationally recognized young designers to emerge here in the last few years.

PRACTICAL PROBLEMS

Many buyers and fashion reporters have complained about the practical problems of a shortened schedule, with shows running at least 30 minutes late. They said more shows were usually more punctual at the preceding London Fashion Week.

“It’s extremely hard and it’s very disappointing to have to fit so much into four days,” Marigay McKee, fashion and beauty director at Britain’s Harrods store said.

British fashion reporter Hilary Alexander said the short schedule was not fair on anybody.

“I don’t know why it has become so short, Milan is like an economic powerhouse for fashion and there are so many major brands here,” she said. “It would be nice to have a slightly longer schedule like we normally do..six, seven days.”

Wintour has been known to curtail her stay in Milan before as well as in Paris but the French capital has not changed its calendar as a result.

Several designers and businessmen have voiced concern that a short show week would reduce the strength of Italy’s fashion industry especially at a time when the economic crisis has hit demand. Turnover for the sector fell 15 percent last year to 56.5 billion Euros. An improvement is forecast for this year.

“The real problem is that a shorter calendar not only damages fashion shows but also the business,” Michele Norsa, CEO of Salvatore Ferragamo, told Reuters. “This creates a sense of anxiety for those who come here from abroad. We need to have more time for the shows and our business contacts.”

Boselli has promised a new calendar for the September shows with “five strong days”. While Wintour declined to speak with Reuters when approached at Milan fashion week, the editor of Italian Vogue, Franca Sozzani said the calendar was “awful.”

“It will last longer in the next season,” she said. “You always need to hit the bottom then come back up to float.”

Armani, Veneta Reaffirm ItACalian Style

Armani, Veneta Reaffirm ItACalian StyleGiorgio Armani’s voluptuous elegance rubbed shoulders with Bottega Veneta’s timeless sophistication in their ready-to-wear offerings for next winter’s woman at Milan Fashion Week. Excitement over the presence of British actor Clive Owen in the front row at Armani’s show gave way to hushed appreciation of the black velvet and bright silks that coloured the collection.
Both chic and comfortable, it featured puffed miniskirts and cashmere linings while putting forward saffron and other unaccustomed oriental colours. Moschino meanwhile offered a mother lode of basic blacks trimmed with gold and topped with felt cowboy hats. Black leather gloves travelled the arm to meet the level of a strapless minidress in a bold statement of confidence, second only to a 3-D box pleat mini-skirt in red or black for a lurid party evening.
Max Mara set a martial tone with high-buttoned dresses and coats while also staying true to its trademark cashmere, camel hair and flannels in black, blue and grey, with gold highlights.
Bottega Veneta meanwhile redefined verticality, drawing the eye swiftly from top to toe with sleeveless silk jersey dresses in black or startling solids such as bottle green, all perched atop black wedge boots or quirky “booties”. An asymmetric black jumpsuit in cashmere jersey had playful business at the top but was strictly no-nonsense on the way down, a hallmark of the collection. Etro proposed an eclectic collection inspired by the orient, featuring luxurious silks in variations on the kimono, as well as heavily tiered African-style necklaces. Muted gold or bronze and dusty blue proved a winning combination in many of the kimono-type creations.
