The symptoms progressed rapidly until make her able to walk only with the twisted, the termination step, and it was difficult to read, making simple math – even remembering the little things. Miss America 2010 Rima Fakih

May 18, 2010 by gulmor

Miss America 2010 Rima Fakih, LAS VEGAS: Lebanese immigrant Rima Fakih says it was a certain look from Donald Trump that tipped her off that she had won the 2010 Miss USA title.

The 24-year-old Miss resident of the state of Michigan beat out 50 other women to take the title Sunday night, despite nearly stumbling in her evening gown.

She told reporters later that she believed she had won after glancing at pageant owner Trump as she awaited the results with the first runner-up, Miss Oklahoma USA Morgan Elizabeth Woolard.

“That’s the same look that he gives them when he says, ‘You’re hired,’” on Trump’s reality TV show “The Apprentice,” she said.

“She’s a great girl,” said Trump, who owns the pageant with NBC in a joint venture.

Fakih took top honors at the pageant at the Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino on the Las Vegas Strip after strutting confidently in an orange and gold bikini, wearing a strapless white gown that resembled a wedding dress and saying health insurance should cover birth control pills.

Fakih, an Arab-American from Dearborn, Michican, told pageant organizers her family celebrates both Muslim and Christian faiths. She moved to the United States as a baby and was raised in New York, where she attended a Catholic school. Her family moved to Michigan in 2003.

Pageant officials said historical pageant records were not detailed enough to show whether Fakih was the first Arab American, Muslim or immigrant to win the Miss USA title. The pageant started in 1952 as a local bathing suit competition in Long Beach, California.

Fakih told reporters she sold her car after graduating college in Michigan to help pay for her run in the Miss Michigan USA pageant.

In a moment that was replayed during the broadcast, Fakih nearly fell while finishing her walk in her gown because of the length of its train. But she made it without a spill and went on to win.

“I did it here, I better not do it at Miss Universe,” she said. “Modeling does help, after all.”

Fakih replaces Miss USA 2009 Kristen Dalton and won a spot representing the United States this summer in the 2010 Miss Universe pageant. She also gets a one-year lease in a New York apartment with living expenses, an undisclosed salary, and various health, professional and beauty services.

During the interview portion, Fakih was asked whether she thought birth control should be paid for by health insurance, and she said she believed it should because it’s costly.

“I believe that birth control is just like every other medication, even though it’s a controlled substance,” Fakih said.

Woolard handled the night’s toughest question, about Arizona’s new immigration law. Woolard said she supports the law, which requires police enforcing another law to verify a person’s immigration status if there’s “reasonable suspicion” that the person is in the country illegally.

She said she’s against illegal immigration but is also against racial profiling.

“I’m a huge believer in states’ rights. I think that’s what’s so wonderful about America,” Woolard said. “So I think it’s perfectly fine for Arizona to create that law.”

Miss Virginia USA Samantha Evelyn Casey was the second runner-up, Miss Colorado USA Jessica Hartman was third runner-up, and Miss Maine USA Katherine Ashley Whittier was the fourth runner-up.

Most of the field of contestants from all 50 states and the District of Columbia were eliminated just after the pageant began and the entire group danced onstage to “TiK ToK” by Ke$ha.

A panel of eight judges, including NBA star Carmelo Anthony, Treasure Island casino-hotel owner Phil Ruffin and Olympic figure skater Johnny Weir, were judging the girls throughout the night.

After 15 contestants strutted in swimsuits, five were eliminated. Another five were eliminated after the evening gown competition.

Miss Nebraska USA Belinda Renee Wright won the Miss Congeniality award, roughly one week after her father was killed in a farm accident. Miss Alabama USA Audrey Moore won Miss Photogenic after an online fan vote.

The competition, which is not affiliated with the Miss America pageant, was hosted by celebrity chef Curtis Stone and NBC correspondent Natalie Morales.

US National Team Kicks Off Camp in N.J.

PRINCETON, N.J. — While Bill Clinton threw his support behind the U.S. bid for either the 2018 or 2022 World Cup at a Harlem event on Monday, U.S. national team coach Bob Bradley, some players and a few dozen members of the media launched their preparation for the 2010 event about 45 miles to the southwest in Princeton.

Not all of the 30 players who were named last week to the preliminary roster practiced on Monday morning. Some were held out with nagging injuries, others were yet to arrive. But the slow start didn’t seem to dampen the mood. Reporters and photographers were allowed to observe the last 15 minutes of training, which consisted mostly of laps around the field and stretching, before getting their crack at Bradley and a few players. A group of Princeton students took turns taking photos of the athletes as they exited the interview area.

Bradley confirmed during his news conference at Roberts Stadium that several of those players won’t have long to impress. He said he intends to make the decision on the final 23 he’ll take to South Africa next week, following the May 25 friendly against the Czech Republic in Hartford, Conn. The pared-down team will head to Philadelphia for a May 29 game against Turkey before flying to Johannesburg.

“It’s like anything else. You have a plan in your head, but then you have to be able to adjust at some point. But the idea would be that by the time we get to Philadelphia, we have made our decisions and have our 23,” Bradley told reporters.

That doesn’t leave much time to sort things out. He has players who are injured, players who lack recent game experience and players who are coming off very long and demanding European seasons. In response to a question from FanHouse, Bradley admitted that it could be difficult trying to balance the competing interests of getting his first-choice players into World Cup form while trying to decide who would comprise the back end of his roster.

Kareena Kapoor I Am What I Am Because Of My Flops

Kareena Kapoor I Am What I Am Because Of My FlopsMUMBAI INDIA : Kareena Kapoor said that she would hate being known only for her looks and that being a superstar is about overcoming failures and not just delivering hits…

We met Kareena for a chat at Saif Ali Khan’s Bandra residence where she was beaming because of her newborn nephew and her week-long break to spend time with family. Kareena was surfing the net when we entered the tastefully done apartment. Saif left for some shopping when the interview began and came back later for a casual chat

How is life now that you have become a maasi for the second time?

Absolutely amazing. The baby boy (Kiaan) is really cute. Samaria looks so much like Sunjay (Kapur) but the newborn looks just like Karisma. It’s celebration time as the family has a boy after a long time.

3 Idiots has smashed all box-office records and you have managed to hold your ground in an Aamir Khan film. Comment.

I think it’s also because it is a Raju Hirani film. It’s the first time and Aamir and I starred together so there were a lot of expectations. I feel that I make the best pair with Aamir.

You only did the film because of Aamir and Raju.

In each of my films, good or bad, I have always stood out irrespective of the presence of other actors. I am doing Ra.One and I have fantastic roles in Agent Vinod and Golmaal 3. I have strived really hard to be known first as an actor then a star. I would hate it if someone tells me that I looked very good in my films and I hope that I am cast for my talent and not for my beauty.

I am here to sell my talent and I take great pride when I am offered a role in a boys’ film like 3 Idiots. I think my audience no longer likes me in films like Kambakkth Ishq and honestly I have realised that I won’t make that mistake again.

Kurbaan got good reviews but it didn’t work.

An actor is an actor because of failures, not success. A superstar is one who overcomes failures and people remember how good you are in a film, which has not worked. I am what I am because of my flops. Anybody can give two super hits and become number one.

Is there a long thought process before signing a film now?

Sometimes there is no thought process at all. We actors are like scientists who keep on experimenting. People should know that Kareena takes risks and I did Chameli when I was 23 years old. I don’t care about what people say about Tashan as I gave everything to the film by changing my body. How many actresses have the courage to take up the challenge of transforming themselves especially in this male dominated industry? Tashan was an achievement as I also met Saif during the film. Sometimes flop films and not hits is great news for actors.

How do you mange to have a good equation with all the Khans?

I have chosen the safest Khan for my personal life. I don’t know if there are any sides as all of them are really different. Saif and I are great friends with Aamir and Shah Rukh is like family. My sister loves Salman.

It’s said that you are the highest paid actress in the industry today. Is it true?

I don’t know. You tell me as every day there are reports that so and so is charging so much. If there is a list on highest paid actresses, I want to be number ten.

But the rivalry is evident when it comes to endorsements.

A brand will sign me if they think I am good. There are only three shampoos and three soaps in the market so where does the question of who is the most wanted actress arise? Everybody has brands to endorse.

How do you manage to take frequent breaks given your busy schedule?

I take lot of off time as it’s very important for an actor to work do great work and take breaks. I must spend time with family and my loved ones or else I will just wear off, I will die, and my looks will fade. I do four movies and 12 brands a year so I need to travel all over the world and explore, which also shows in my acting. I have instructed Zahid (secretary) that after every three months I need to have a break for at least a week to look rejuvenated.

Although I appreciate people who want to work all year, I can’t do it.

There is so much speculation about your and Saif’s relationship and wedding. Does it affect you?

We have been open about our relationship and that’s why we are the hottest couple. If we get married now there will be no curiosity. We are enjoying all the attention and are used to news about us getting married and breaking up all the time. Whenever we get married, we will let the world will know.

Are wedding bells five years down the line?

It will be much lesser than that. (Laughs)

News is that you are buying an IPL team with Saif?

We did go for the bidding and we had all the papers in place but it got cancelled. If we are rebidding, it will be Saif’s call. I don’t understand cricket but Saif follows it. Movies are my only passion.

There are reports that you and Saif are planning a joint production house?

I want directors and producers to make films for me. I don’t want to make films for myself. Professionally we are dramatically different as I sign a film saying ‘let’s do it’ while Saif won’t do a film till he is 100 per cent sure.

Are you doing Madhur Bhandarkar’s next film?

I would love to work with Madhur. We are working on a script but nothing has been finalised yet.

What about Milenge Milenge and the constant issues about Shahid Kapoor?

These talks have resurfaced as Milenge Milenge will soon release. I have told Boney Kapoor (producer) that I am ready to promote the film. As for reports about Shahid and me, I am used to it.

Ncaa Mens Basketball Bracket 2010

March 17, 2010 by gulmor

Ncaa Mens Basketball Bracket 2010, The NCAA women’s basketball bracket 2010 is officially out now. Of course, the NCAA women’s basketball bracket 2010 technically has 64 teams, but really has one. The Connecticut Huskies have become the most dominating.
team in women’s history, and maybe the most dominating Division I team in any gender for three decades. Already, the Huskies broke their own record-setting winning streak, and can beat the UCLA men’s 88-game streak next year. But to keep that alive, they must win the national title first, and the NCAA women’s basketball bracket 2010 has 63 teams trying – perhaps in vain – to stop them.

The Huskies got put in the Dayton regional, as their first possible victim is 16′th seeded Southern. Afterwards, they next face either Temple or James Madison, and possibly Iowa State or Virginia in the Sweet 16. On the other side, Ohio State becomes the team most likely to stop Connecticut, as the No. 2 seed. Florida State trails behind them in third, and the Big East’s St. John’s got the sixth seed.

There are other teams and regions in the NCAA women’s basketball bracket 2010. In fact, if the Huskies get out of Dayton, they could face old arch-rival Tennessee in the Final Four. The Lady Volunteers returned to their traditional place as a top seed, this time in the Memphis region. They start off against Austin Peay, the only team in with a losing record.

Other challengers in this region of the NCAA women’s basketball bracket 2010 are second seeded Duke and third seeded West Virginia. Baylor received the fourth seed, with old powers like Texas and LSU at six and seven.

On the other side, 32 teams may play for the right to face Connecticut in the national title game. The NCAA women’s basketball bracket 2010 could have had two undefeated teams, but Nebraska fell to Texas A&M in the Big 12 semifinals. Yet the Cornhuskers got the No. 1 seed in the Kansas City region, a year after they missed the tournament altogether.

Trailing Nebraska is Notre Dame, who was Connecticut’s record-setting 71’st straight victim. Another Big 12 power, Oklahoma, got the third seed with Kentucky at fourth.

Mumbai: They might act hostile in each other’s presence but when it comes to clearing the air about their alleged break-up, Salman and his love Katrina leave no stone unturned. Salman in a care-a-damn mood avowed that Katrina was still his ladylove. Speaking on a chat show the actor, for the first time, accepted that he was ‘dating Katrina’. A guest on Koel Purie’s chat show, the actor not only talked openly about Katrina but also his ex-lover Aishwarya and arch rival Shah Rukh Khan. Confirming the story, a source said, “Salman wasn’t ready for the interview, but Koel grilled him on his set at the Mehboob Studio. She asked him all sorts of questions, some of which were controversial. But Salman answered each one of them in monosyllables.”

And, when the actor was asked whether he was dating Katrina, he replied with a loud ‘Yes!’ However, when he was questioned about ex-girlfriend Ash, he started talking in riddles. “Salman was asked if he would ever work with her, and he replied with a No! It was evident he didn’t want to revisit that chapter of his life, “adds the source. As for SRK, the actor said, “Their lives were going in opposite directions and that they would never be friends again.” Here’s a transcript of the chat show: Koel: Will we ever see you and SRK in a movie? Salman: It’s not that we are husband and wife, you know… I’m not married to him. He’s an actor, I’m an actor, if there’s a film on the level of Karan and Arjun – definitely. Koel: Recently you were both seen at Aamir’s premiere together. Was it awkward? Salman: No, not awkward. Maybe for him; not for me. Koel: SRK says you are two parallel people running at different speeds (that’s why the two will never meet). Do you buy into that? Salman: No. We’re two different people, running in two different directions altogether. Public: When can I expect another film pairing Ash and you, like the hit Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam? Salman: I don’t think ever Public: Who do you prefer: Katrina or Ash? Salman: Definitely Katrina. Ash is married to Abhishek Bachchan, she’s very happy and I… definitely Katrina. Koel: Firstly, are you still with Kat? Salman: Ya ya… ya ya. Public: Are you still in love with Ash? Salman: No, buddy.
Public: Who’s the greatest Khan? Salman: Yusuf Khan.

India’s Unending Defence Expenditure

February 19, 2010 by Tariq

Despite criticism from various circles that India is not investing more to tackle development issues as millions remain mired in poverty; the Indian government’s ambitious modernisation plan for its military is in full swing.

In February this year, Indian military procurement units descended on the DefExpo 2010 trade fair in New Delhi. Inaugurating the Indian Defence Exhibition, Defence Minister A.K. Antony said that India’s defence expenditure, which is 2.5 percent of its gross domestic product (GDP), is going to increase. He pointed out, “our defence industry is open up to 100 percent for Indian private sector, while foreign direct investment is allowed up to 26 percent.” Antony further indicated that our government is committed to rapid modernisation of armed forces.

Over the next 12 years, India is set to spend a whopping US$200 billion on defence acquisitions to replace its outdated inventory. In this regard, on February 15, 2010, a report of the Indian strategic defense magazine (India Strategic’s DefExpo) revealed that 70 per cent of the inventory of the Indian armed forces is 20-plus years old, and needs to be replaced with the modern technology. It explained that nearly half of this funding ($100b) will go to the Indian Air Force (IAF), which would need to replace more than half of its combat jet fleet as well as the entire transport aircraft and helicopter fleet. The army needs new guns, tanks, rocket launchers, multi-terrain vehicles, while the navy needs ships, aircraft carriers and new range of nuclear submarines.

In three from 1994 to 1997 India’s defence budget was increased from 20 percent to 24.4 percent. For the financial year 2001-2002 defence has been allocated Rs 620,000.00 million. This amount shows an increase of Rs 75,000 million as compared to previous year’s revised estimates of Rs 544,610 million. In 2009, India increased its defense budget by a whopping 28.2 percent or Rs 130,000.00 million. Some experts estimate that military spending will increase further, totalling as much as 200 billion dollars over the period to 2022.

India’s military has planned a massive upgrade of its mainly 1990s-era weapons systems which is mostly from the former Russia. The plans include the purchase of 126 new combat aircraft to replace an ageing fleet of MiG-21s.

The US has emerged as a potential military supplier to India since the two countries signed a deal of civil energy technology in 2008, which lifted sanctions on New Delhi in order to import nuclear technology. India is likely to become a major customer for the US military-industrial complex over the next few years.

During the recent visit of the US Secretary of State Robert Gates to New Delhi, American Defence officials, however, have said that US weapons sales to India would not be a focus of the trip. Regardless of such denials, the key reason for the Gates’ visit can be found in the fact that India is planning to raise its military budget by 50% to almost $40 billion, making military expenditure 3% of the annual GDP. In contrast to India’s planned defence expenditures, Pakistan’s entire 2009-10 budget amounts to little over $30 billion.

India, the largest arms buyer among emerging nations, accounted for 7.5 per cent of all international arms sales between 2000 and 2007. It has spent billions of dollars in the past few years on purchases of planes, radars and ships from Britain, France, Germany and Russia and Israel.

In recent years, India has bought reconnaissance aircraft from US aerospace major Boeing worth 2.1 billion-dollars, medium range missiles for 1.4 billion dollars from Israeli Aerospace Industries, and signed an upgrade service contract with the Russian Aircraft Corporation to upgrade its MiG 29 squadrons for 965 million dollars. Several deals are planned for the near future including one of the largest arms contracts of recent times—a 11-billion-dollar project to acquire 126 multi-role combat aircraft.

It is mentionable that after 9/11, both India and Israel which had openly jumped on Bush’s anti-terrorism enterprise are acting upon a secret diplomacy, targeting Pakistan China, Iran and Syria. In this context, Indo-Israeli secret diplomacy could be assessed from the interview of Israel’s ambassador to India, Mark Sofer published in the Indian weekly Outlook on February 18, 2008. Regarding India’s defence arrangements with Tel Aviv, Sofer had surprisingly disclosed “We do have a defence relationship with India, which is no secret” and “with all due respect, the secret part will remain a secret.” As regards joint exercises, Sofer replied, “Certain issues need to remain under wraps for whatever reason.”

Notably, India’s ‘The Tribune’ wrote on September 10, 2003, “India and Israel took giant leaps forward in bolstering the existing strategic ties”, and Tel Aviv has “agreed to share its expertise with India in various fields such as anti-fidayeen operations, surveillance satellites, intelligence sharing and space exploration.” With the support of Israel, New Delhi has been acquiring an element of strategic depth by setting up logistical bases in the Indian Ocean for its navy.

In fact, India wants to become a mini-superpower of the region and hence it uses the pretext of deterrence against Pakistan and China. In this context, New Delhi with the support of US and Israel has presumed peace-loving Pakistan and China as their arch enemies, but it does not admit officially.

In May, 1998, when India detonated five nuclear tests, Islamabad was compelled to follow the suit through its own atomic experiments. But Pakistan which so far relied upon the minimum nuclear deterrence has again been forced by India’s unending spending on arms purchases to counterbalance the former. In this regard, Pakistan has signed a number of agreements with China.

Nevertheless, currently, more than half of India’s budget is allocated for military, paramilitary, various security forces and debt servicing. That leaves less than half for everything else including infrastructure development projects, education, healthcare, poverty alleviation, and various human services. New Delhi’ s latest arms buildup will leave even less for what India needs most to lift hundreds of millions of its citizens from abject poverty, hunger illiteracy and disease.

Indian civil society organisations, while complaining of excessive defence spending indicated that the government spends 2.35 per cent of GDP on defence, but only 1.72 per cent on the social sector. The defence budget for 2009-2010 is 29 billion dollars, up 34 percent over the previous one.

Indian defence analyst Ravinder Pal Singh, while calling New Delhi’s unending defence spending at the cost of poverty-alleviation—with security requirements competing with socio-economic concerns for money calls it guns-versus-butter question

Even some of Indian officials are surprised in relation to Indian defence expenditure which has no bounds. For example, an official of the country’s finance ministry remarked, “There is a dilemma…poverty needs to be eradicated to prevent men from taking to the guns…but more funds for security means less money for poverty alleviation.”

Meanwhile, a report of United Nations pointed out that India ranks 134th of 182 countries on the United Nations Development Programme’s Human Development Index. It estimated that 50 per cent of the world’s undernourished population lives in India. Nearly 31 per cent of the billion-plus Indians earn less than a dollar a day.

Secretary General of the Control Arms Foundation of India Binalakshmi Nepram said, “When people are dying of poverty and bad sanitation, what protection will arms provide them?”

On the one hand, international community has been making strenuous efforts for world peace in wake of global financial crisis and war against terrorism, on the other, India has initiated deadly nuclear arms in South Asia where people are already facing multiple problems of grave nature. Majority of South Asian people are living below the poverty level, lacking basic facilities like fresh food and clean water. While yielding to acute poverty, every day, some persons commit suicide in India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka etc.

Setting aside regional problems, and resolution of Indo-Pak issues-especially thorny dispute of Kashmir, Indian rulers state that they don’t have any aggressive designs. But it becomes a big joke of the 21st century, reminding a maxim, “armed to the teeth, but no enemy”, if we take cognisance of India’s unending defence expenditure.
