LOS ANGELES, Mel Gibson Tape: Law enforcement officials said on Thursday they are looking into claims that Oscar-winning director and actor Mel Gibson physically abused his former girlfriend and the mother of one of his children.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s office released a statement saying it was “gathering information regarding the allegations” and would disclose no other details because the probe was preliminary.

A spokesman for the “Braveheart” star declined to comment citing pending litigation between Gibson and ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.

The sheriff’s statement said the alleged violence occurred in January at Gibson’s home in Malibu, California, and it named Grigorieva as the alleged victim.

Gibson, 54, and the 40-year-old Russian singer have been embroiled in a bitter legal battle in recent months over the custody of their infant daughter, Lucia.

They have obtained restraining orders against each other.

Gibson found fame as an action hero in the “Mad Max” movies. He boosted his stardom in the “Lethal Weapon” cop flicks, among others, and won Oscars for directing and producing “Braveheart.”

His religious film “The Passion of the Christ,” which he directed and made outside Hollywood’s major studios, was a major box office hit.

But the actor ran into trouble in 2006 when he was arrested for drunk driving in Malibu, California, where he lives, and then launched into an anti-Semitic tirade against the arresting officer. He was quoted as telling the official that “Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world.”

Gibson subsequently apologized publicly for what he called “despicable behavior” and sought counseling. He was sentenced to three years probation and ordered to attend an alcohol recovery program.

Mobile Service Of Google Partially Blocked In China

SAN FRANCISCO: Google on Monday reported that its mobile Internet service in China was partially blocked but it was unknown whether the trouble was related to a stand-off over censorship there.

A website Google set up for people to track the status of its services in China showed that the US Internet giant’s Mobile offering on Sunday joined Groups, Picasa and Docs as listed as “partially blocked.”

“We can confirm that our status page indicates that Mobile services are partially blocked from within mainland China,” a Google spokesman said in an email response to an AFP inquiry.

Mobile service availability fluctuates and it was too soon to be certain when the partial blockage was a retaliatory move by Chinese officials.

Google mobile includes search, blog, map, news and other services for smartphones and other Internet-enabled handsets.

Google-owned video-sharing website YouTube and a Blogger service for people to voice ideas, musings or observations online were completely blocked, according to the online “Mainland China service availability” list.

A face-off with China over online censorship culminated on March 22 with Google stopping its voluntary filtering of online search results in China.

Days later, China’s second largest mobile phone operator said it will remove Google’s search function from new handsets in response to the US Internet giant’s tussle with Beijing.

China Unicom said the search function would be dropped from new phones using Google’s Android mobile operating system.

China currently has at least 384 million Internet users, but it has more than 750 million mobile subscribers, many of whom access web content via their handsets.

In January, shortly after saying it could leave China altogether over web censorship and cyberattacks, Google postponed the launch of Android-based mobile handsets developed with Motorola and Samsung for China Unicom.
