Gator Chomp Won’t Stop Fla. Triathlete

Doug McCardORLANDO — The sign at the park entrance on Monday said “No Swimming Today.” Considering what happened a day earlier, who would want to?

“It felt like I was hit by a car,” Doug McCard said.

A car with jaws and teeth and a spiny tail. McCard’s Sunday morning swim was rudely interrupted by an alligator, which went after him like Kirstie Alley goes after an ?clair.

(Click here for WKMG’s video and story on McCard.)

McCard will be OK, though he’ll never be able to take off his shirt again without causing people to wonder if he was a spy caught and tortured by the North Koreans. All of which got me wondering whether we give the triathlon enough respect.

The casual observer sees a bunch of spindly people doing three mundane activities, none of which include swimming or biking or running to the nearest psychiatrist.

Don’t you have to be at least slightly deranged to voluntarily swim 2.4 miles, bike 112 miles and then run a 26.2-mile marathon? Most of us won’t do that in a lifetime. Ironman participants do it in a day.

From a sheer toughness standpoint, the training tops anything on those Gatorade commercials where fluorescent sweat spews from exhausted football, basketball and tennis players.

Then you throw in the fact that even if Serena Williams is infuriated at a linesman, no one is going to leave practice with gash marks.

Suicide Bomber Killed 10 People : Kabul

Suicide Bomber Killed 10 People : KabulA suicide bomber killed 10 people near an upmarket shopping and hotel complex in the heart of Kabul today, while police shot dead two other would-be attackers.
A military official said that 10 people were killed and 11 others wounded. Witnesses reported at least two smaller blasts around the Safi Landmark complex as police cordoned off the area, ambulances rushed to the scene and sporadic gunfire was heard. Witnesses said it was followed by two or three smaller blasts as grey smoke billowed over the area. The heavily fortified centre of Kabul has been relatively calm since January 18, when Taliban gunmen stormed the city’s commercial heart, taking over buildings, detonating suicide vests and killing at least five people. Shattered glass carpeted the road outside the Park Residence Hotel, a guesthouse frequented by foreigners in the centre of the city. Police commandos were seen using ladders to scale the glass outside wall of the guesthouse. The low-rise hotel overlooks Sar-I-Naw Park — popular with men who attend cock fights and volleyball matches — and is adjacent to the eight-story City Centre shopping mall and Safi Landmark Hotel.

Whale kills Trainer as Horrified Spectators Watch

MIAMI: Whale kills trainer as horrified spectators watch, A killer whale killed a 40-year-old female trainer in an apparent attack witnessed by horrified onlookers at Florida’s SeaWorld entertainment park.

Authorities at first said the woman died after apparently falling into the whale’s tank, but an eyewitness claimed the animal leapt out of the water to grab her in its mouth.

The Orlando Sentinel newspaper reported that SeaWorld executive Chuck Tompkins later confirmed witness reports that Tilikum dragged the trainer into the water.

“We’re in the process of investigating all of the people and the animals,” Tompkins said.

“One of our most experienced animal trainers drowned in an incident with one of our killer whales this afternoon,” said Dan Brown, general manager at the Orlando, Florida entertainment park.

“This is an extraordinarily difficult time for the SeaWorld parks,” he said said at a televised press conference.

The massive animal had reportedly been involved in two previous incidents in which a trainer and a man who apparently jumped into his tank were killed.

Jim Solomons of the Orange County Sheriff’s office said the trainer killed Wednesday — identified by SeaWorld as Dawn Brancheau — died after slipping into the tank.

“She apparently slipped or fell… and was fatally injured by one of the whales,” he said. “This appears to be an accidental death, it’s a tragic death.”

The whale, named Tilikum or “friend” in the Native American language Chinook Jargon, is among the killer whales, dolphins and seals whose shows have made SeaWorld so popular.

But he has been involved in previous human deaths, including in 1991 when a part-time trainer at the Sealand of the Pacific facility in Canada was killed in his tank, according to the Humane Society of the United States.

In 1999, after being shipped from Canada to Orlando, he was blamed for the death of a man who had apparently stayed in the park after closing.

The Humane Society said the man jumped into Tilikum’s tank and was found dead the next morning, his naked body covered in scratches that suggested he had been dragged around the bottom and sides of the tank.

An eyewitness told CNN that Tilikum attacked the trainer as she showed him off to park visitors following the Dine with Shamu show.

“He just took off like a bat out of you know what, took off really fast and came back around to the glass, jumped up, and grabbed the trainer by the waist and started shaking her violently,” witness Victoria Biniak said.

“The sirens were going off. People were running out. I’ve never seen so many SeaWorld employees come out of the woodwork.”

Another eyewitness told CNN that the whales in the tank had begun ignoring the trainers.

“We could tell this whale was not in a good mood at all. We literally could tell it was not cooperating,” said the unnamed witness.

Though killer whales, also known as orcas, are a common attraction at entertainment parks, they are known for aggressive “play” and behavior in the wild, including batting seals or dolphins back and forth.

They are huge creatures — Tilikum weighs in at least 11,000 pounds — and “are among the most curious of all whales, with a great tendency to ‘play’ and to manipulate objects,” according to SeaWorld’s website.

Tilikum was captured in November 1983 off the coast of Iceland and is one of several killer whales on display at the Orlando park, which was partially closed down after the trainer’s death.

SeaWorld’s website said its shows involving killer whales in Orlando and in San Diego, California, have been suspended.

Animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals released a statement saying the death was a “tragedy that didn’t have to happen.”

Earning an unprecedented three Tony Awards before the age of 30 (Carousel, Master Class, and Ragtime) and a fourth in 2004 (A Raisin in the Sun), singer and actress Audra McDonald is frequently compared to legendary performers such as Judy Garland and Barbra Streisand. But like all great artists, she is a unique force, blending a luscious, classically-trained soprano with an incomparable gift for dramatic truth-telling. In addition to her theatrical work she maintains a major career as a concert and recording artist appearing regularly on many of the great stages of the world. Audra McDonald opened the 2008-2009 season of the Los Angeles Philharmonic with a gala concert at Disney Hall, celebrating Esa-Pekka Salonen’s final season as music director. During the summer of 2009 she returned to the New York stage as Olivia in the Public Theater’s Shakespeare in the Park production of Twelfth Night, directed by Daniel Sullivan. She was also heard performing a new song by Stephen Flaherty in the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks Spectacular, broadcast live on NBC. Along with her live performances, Ms. McDonald maintains a thriving television career, earning an Emmy nomination for her role in the made-for-television movie version of A Raisin in the Sun on ABC, alongside hip-hop mogul Sean “Diddy” Combs, her co-star from the 2004 Broadway revival. Returning to ABC in the fall of 2009, Ms. McDonald can be seen as Dr. Naomi Bennett in the third season of the hit television series Private Practice. Her most recent recordings are Kurt Weill’s The Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny—winner of two 2009 Grammy Awards—and a new studio recording of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Allegro, released on the Sony MasterWorks Broadway label in February 2009.

During the 2007-2008 season, Audra McDonald appeared with the New Jersey Symphony, conducted by frequent collaborator Ted Sperling, as well as in concerts at Cal Performances, the Gilmore Festival, the Jorgensen Center for the Performing Arts, the Savannah Music Festival, the Purchase Performing Arts Center, the Thomasville Entertainment Foundation, the Shedd Institute for the Arts, the Ferst Center for the Performing Arts, the Munson-Williams-Proctor Arts Institute, and a special Juilliard gala opposite Barbara Cook.

Katrina Kaif Scarred

Katrina Kaif ScarredThe De Dana Dan experience has left the sweet Katrina Kaif scarred. Yeah, we’re not kidding dearies, the movie is a rib-tickling comedy,
alright, but the laughs came after a lot of pain. Apparently Akki and she were shooting a flooding sequence, she fell down and her ankle was caught under a rope. Katrina started screaming for help; Akshay — who has saved many a damsel in distress — thought she was panicking because of the rising water level, so he repeatedly tried reassuring her that she wouldn’t drown in that depth of water. Only after her, “Save Me!” squeals didn’t stop, Akshay realised that there was a problem there. By then the rope had cut into her ankle and left a deep scar. In fact the scar is so prominent that whenever her legs are exposed in a shot, she has to spend time covering the ankle with layers of greasepaint. Poor baby! And you thought that comedy was like a walk in the park, huh? Our lovely Katz wouldn’t say so, we think.

Katrina Kaif Causes Trouble

Katrina Kaif Causes TroubleIt seems Katrina Kaif’s changing style is becoming a cause of concern for the makers of her film RAAJNEETI. If reports are to be believed, Katrina Kaif used to frequently change her make-up and costumes during the shoot of the film that it led to some continuity problems. Reports further suggest that what stunned the makers of the film was the fact that Katrina was absolutely oblivious of the problems that she was causing to her crew members. Some even thought that Katrina had no understanding of the importance of continuity in the filmmaking process and that’s why she used to care so less about it. Well, Katrina might have caused pain to the crew members, but the film surely is being awaited with great enthusiasm.

I Want To Be A Mom: Shilpa Shetty

I Want To Be A Mom Shilpa ShettyBarely two days after her grandiose wedding, Shilpa Shetty-Kundra – that’s how she wants to be known now – feels she’s on top of the world. “Thank God, I plan to get married only once! This has been the most exhausting week of my life . And also the happiest. I’ve waited so long for my wedding. Outwardly, the only thing that’s different is the choodas, and the way I’m dressed. Inside me, everything feels the same. I’ve known Raj for so long that it feels no different otherwise,” says the not-so-blushing bride! “I have a severe jaw ache from all the smiling at the reception. Now I know why my colleagues avoid wedding receptions! It really does get impossible to manage the entire crowd,” she adds. Apparently, there were more gatecrashers at the reception than guests. “At the wedding too, there were people climbing trees and walls to take photographs,” Shilpa giggles. “But it was a far more intimate, private and controlled affair than the reception. Shamita kept saying that she felt she was part of a Punjabi wedding sequence from a movie!” After her effervescent laughter finally subsides, Shilpa says soberly, “The wedding was very traditional and simple. I felt I was going through a dream. My marriage was exactly the way I had imagined it.” The Kundras will now leave for their honeymoon, followed by a Mediterranean cruise for the entire family. Says Shilpa happily, “We’re going to the Bahamas for our honeymoon. Then after we return, Raj is taking our entire family, all the Shettys and the Kundras, on a Mediterranean cruise for Christmas. He thought everyone needed a break.”

And where does Mrs Kundra plan to live now, Mumbai, or London? “I have to get acquainted with Raj’s circle of friends in London, get used to socialising with them.Yes, we’ll have two homes now. In any case, I was always travelling to and fro. Now I’ll be doing this even more! I have my film-production company in Mumbai. So I can’t be in London only.”

Talk about motherhood, and Shilpa’s all eager, “Oh yes! I certainly want to be a mother. I can’t wait to start our family.”
